When I'm feeling Down

I'm not going to bore everyone with my latest bout of depression (school, life etc pulling me down) instead I wanted to spice up this Monday morning with something that ALWAYS cheers me up (I know its a crass tv ad, but its so cute!! I love these little boys, I always think "future Bill Gate types," these kids are so adorable, you just want to run up and hug them!).

(check it out, I finally figured out how to put a video up - woohoo!).

SCHIP, crying talk show hosts and stuff

Like the guy on the E! Soup show said, unless you've been in a vegetative state, you have probably heard about Ellen DeGenere's breakdown about her doggie situation last week. And if you're a faithful reader of my blog you know that I do, on occassion, watch Ellen. I did not see this particular episode, had to youtube it. Something about the whole incident disturbed me.

Its not that I don't begrudge Ellen her feelings (I am not making a decision on whether she is right or not as I have not heard the other side of the story), I guess what bothers me is that in the same week Ellen was crying over this dog, Congress was unable to pass the S-CHIP bill. The dismissal of the S-CHIP bill means that in the near future, thousands of middle class American children's health is in danger since they probably will not have access to health care. This means things like that which happened with the litle boy in Maryland (kid died of an untreated cavity which bloomed into a brain infection) will happen more freqently in the supposed "last remaining superpower" of the world. The S-CHIP bill covers children whose parents are not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid but usually not earning enough to afford their own private health insurance (i.e. working at Starbucks making $22,000 a year).

Look I love animals like the next person; animals should be treated with compassion, and kindess..but its this idea of putting animals over humans that I can't reconcile.

In one sitting, Ellen moved a country to death threats against this shelter...why can't that momentum be used for humans as well? Can you just imagine what would have happened to that bill if Ellen had cried about that on Tuesday, chances are VERY good it would not have been defeated two days later on Thursday.

NPR's commentator John Ridley I think says what I'm feeling. He writes, "I like animals. However, I don't value them over beings who walk upright, have opposable thumbs and can one-click their music over iTunes."

Maybe that makes me a horrible person, but suppose that just 1/10th of the empathy shown to animals in this country was extended to humanity, can you fathom the effect it would have....maybe even make the world a better place?

Eid Murbarak

EID Mubarak (happy EID)!!!

The month of fasting ends tomorrow, Friday, and we celebrate Saturday, lots of eating and meeting old friends. This particular month of fasting has just flown by for me.
Wikpedia has a good description of what goes on, on EID:

"The Eid prayer (salah) is followed by the khutba (sermon) and then a prayer (dua') asking for forgiveness, mercy and help for the plight of Muslims across the world. It is then customary to embrace the persons sitting on either side of oneself as well as ones relatives, friends and acquaintances.
Muslims spend the day thanking the Creator for all their blessings, as well as simply having fun and enjoying themselves. Children are normally given gifts or money."

Wishing peace, joy, wisdom and happiness to all; may ALLAH's blessings be with you on this special day and always!

Nathan on Ellen!!!!

Happy day, happy day, my friends!!!

Nathan Fillion was on the Ellen DeGeneres show - woohoo!!! If you didn't know (which you probably didn't since I doubt I mentioned it), I've been writing and calling Ellen's show for the past eight months begging them to put Nathan on...I know, I'm a loser, but as far as I'm concerned there can never be enough Nathan Fillion on tv! Each week I'd either write or call the show, it became like a game, like a weekly reminder "whoops did I call Ellen?" Many a time I'd be driving home from my horrible summer class (remember that...Cases in Finance?) and it would be midnight and I would be leaving a message. Wacky.

As soon as I see Mr. Fillion's face, my day is brightened. He is such a cutie-pootie, plus funny and seemingly nice to boot. While Ellen didn't mention my campaign, I'm so happy she had him on, FINALLY!

Here is a snap video of his apparance (it only stays on for Thursday) - http://ellen.warnerbros.com/

Yay!! (Virginia Gal doing the Snoopy happy dance).
