This and That

Sorry I haven't posted in a bit - we were moving office locations on Friday and it became a much bigger task than I imagined!

Today we are in the new office and I am sad. I lived in my old cubicle in that other location for FIVE YEARS and despite what my resume says, I'm not good with change. That was my home away from home. So much of my life has passed by from that cube. It was hard coming in this morning, not to my comfortable old cubicle with my radio tuned to NPR and my pictures of London and Paris alongside my family and I mugging outside the Taj Mahal. It is too quiet here - the silence coupled with my depressed feelings makes everything magnified in intensity, no?

But I suppose change is a good thing, no? I truly believe everything happens for a reason and there must be some reason God wanted me to make this change. I know if I hadn't gotten the boot, I'd probably have stayed on with non-descript airlines forever and that obviously (according to God) was not the plan.

But to help me threw the day, I have my Get Fuzzy comic and a pic of Prince Harry and William : )

ps - What is everyone's opinion women wearing pant suits for interviews? In a country where women don't show a lot of leg, wouldn't pant suits be better?

Pants are fine, as long as you look 'tailored' and sharp. For interviews I've done it's more the intellegence and aptitude for the job, and a desire for at least minimal body cleanliness. Don't think I've ever rejected somebody because of their clothes, but usually the clothes did match their personallity.

Pants are acceptable for interviews in my field (social services), but I'm not sure about business. I can't imagine that a tailored pantsuit would be unacceptable in any forum, but I suppose it's possible. I'm old enough that I wouldn't want them to hire me if wearing a skirt would ever be a requirement. ;)

I was a bit rattled by the changes I made recently at work (new responsibilities, new location with a much longer commute, new boss). You'll surprise yourself by adapting faster than expected. Once it's done, you get your equilibrium back pretty quickly. Put those pictures up and make the new spot feel like home!

Pantsuits are just as acceptable in today's job market interview process as are skirt suits. Provided the pants are part of a suit, they sould have that tailored look. Even in the most conservative of realms, such as banking or law, women wearing pantsuits are as sharply dressed as those in skirts.

You'll be fine, sweetie.

I stick to skirts w/ pantyhose when interviewing with women in their 40s-60s. Surprisely, I have found the women of this age bracket are the most critical about what you wear.

I have no opinion on pant suits for women.

Now if a man is applying for a position with me I suggest he wear something a bit snug....oh err, sorry I got carried away - I thought I was at Tony's blog!

VG,
I feel your pain, our office is about to move and I will miss my ugly little slice of sameness...

I think well tailored pants and a jacket would be excellent to wear for an interview!

I'm sorry you've been feeling down. Spring is nearly here, maybe you'll feel perkier when warmer weather comes and stays.

Pantsuits are perfectly acceptable, and subcociously preferable depending on with whom you interview, if you think about it. I agree with Divine Calm that you'll probably run into a certain set who are more concerned with your image than others, but I've never heard of anyone supposing you HAVE to wear a skirt to an interview because you're a woman. You can always "feminize" a pantsuit with something colorful or more form fitting, but I don't think pants vs. skirt matters all that much. Either way, just try to look as tailored and put together as possible.

Perhaps this is why I've not advanced in my career. I always look like a shlump in interviews.

Sorry you're having a hard time adjusting to the new space. It must feel wierd.

Joe, thanks for the advice, yes I figure if I'm a great candidate, pants vs. skirt won't matter.

Merci - I can't wait for the equilibrium to come back, I'm very depressed otherwise. Thanks for the comforting words.

Maidink - thanks for the vote of confidence, I hope I don't flub it. I swear I can be my own worst enemy. Try to keep my blabbering to a minimum.

Divine - oh good it's a man, so hopefully the skirt/pant issue won't be one!

Pax - It is funny no that I mocked my old cubicle like no one's business but now I miss the old guy. Kinda like that first beaten up car you get in high school, you were ashamed by it, but when its gone you miss it. Sob.

Brenda - you said it sister! I cannot wait for the good weather to come. I do seriously believe that warmer weather has a good effect on me. The sun and the birds and the greenery, I cannot wait!

Molly - oh it is weird, you should come by and visit. Well it will make leaving super easy! I hardly imagine you ever looked like a shlump in an inteview - probably you were overqualified in many of the positions you shot for. I'm getting that a lot lately, which I hate! Ugh, what a crappy response to a job application.
