Good-bye to an Era
Just a quick post - returned today from Florida. My last free flight....my flight benefits have ended...I'm no longer an airline employee.
It makes me sad just to write it...people use to say to me, "oh Virginia Gal, you love to work for the airlines just because of the free flight benefits," and while I can't say having free flights is not attractive now I know it was more than that.
There is an expression in the industry for those of us who, despite its horrible ups and downs, complete lack of loyalty to employees and job security, adore being able to say, "yes I work for an airline" - people say we have jet fuel in our blood. I think they are right. I get a thrill just as I approach the airport, that smell of jet fuel so strong, walking down the jetway to the plane, I am just happy. The adrenline rush as the plane speeds up and takes off, the amazing miracle of flight. The whole ballet involved with commercial air travel fascinates me.
Over the summer I was at Dulles Airport (in DC) late one night - near midnight - it was just me and the employees and I had this overwhelming sense of calm wash over me. That is where I want to be.
This probably makes no sense, but I'm a little sad today, knowing, for now anyway, I'm no longer part of that world.

But will it not be so much better when you can afford first class on your high paying salary? And the limo to/from the airport?
When I was younger and footloose and fancy free: I flew all over the place. Boulder, Boston, Montreal, L.A., San Francisco...you are right, there is something awesome about an airport.
These days, though, I hear about all of the delays and think, "why bother".
You will go back or you will find a new love. Change is constant, but the more things change the more they remain the same!

Though I have never worked for an airline (although ten years ago I applied to do just that but alas, 'twas not to be) I do love flying and have spent a huge part of my life doing just that and the thought of being on a plane, hopefully soon, has me giddy beyond words and that is saying A LOT seeing that we shall be traveling with two little ones!
HAPPY NEW YEAR my friend and don't look at this as a closed chapter... place it on pause in your mind because hey, the industry is going nowhere and if ever you want to return to it you can do just that! In life, nothing is set in stone and thank goodness for that!
