Eid Mubarak!
Today is Eid ul-Adha. I woke this morning and went to Eid prayers and afterwards celebrated with family and friends over lunch at a family friend's house. Tonight will call my cousins and far-flung friends and wish them blessings of Eid.
What is Eid ul-Adha you ask? From Wikipedia (who says it better than I do), "Eid ul-Adha is celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son for God. Muslims who can afford to do so sacrifice domestic animals, usually sheep, as a symbol of Ibrahim's sacrifice; this sacrifice is called "Qurbani." The meat is distributed amongst their neighbors, relatives, and the poor and hungry. Eid ul-Adha is after Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia."

I really ought to brush up on my Islam and the holidays therein. It took forever for me to get the Jewish ones down. The Christian came naturally thanks to a country that bases everything, from commerce to government, on a Christian holiday schedule.
So do you do a sacrifice? If not a real one, are there "mock" ones where you still go to the poor or less fortunate neighbors to share in the goods?
I'm a typical clueless Christian so forgive me.
Every day, I learn something new about you... see, starting this blog WAS a good idea!!!

Maidink - thanks, don't feel bad you don't know the Muslim holidays, ours change every year cause its based on the lunar calendar. hee hee, we didn't sacrifice anything at home, we usually just send the money back to India and have them do it for us and distribute the money (where there are a ton more poor people).
